There are two main reasons people look for new gates. Often the old gate needs to be replaced. Alternatively, some people want to have more privacy and security. Sometimes people looking for privacy and security choose to go the timber route. Metal should be considered before completely ruling out timber.

Metal gates are generally considered to be long lasting, and they tend to be. A good metal gate should take the weather for years to come. Meanwhile timber may need to be treated to the weather every couple of seasons. Timber gates tend to rot or warp as well. Metal gates tend to cost more, but the cost is worth it when a purchase isn’t needed again in five years.

Where they really have value is security. Metal gates are much harder to force or climb than fence panels. A tall gate with railing can provide height without making the front of the house like a fortress. A lot of people get that trade wrong. They think metal means a solid barrier, like a prison. A wrought iron design with upright bars can look more inviting than a wooden gate that’s at head height, while still doing the job.

That brings us to the first real choice, swing vs sliding. Swing gates are usually the more economical option, and the more common one. However, they need space to open. If your driveway goes uphill from the street, or you are short on space, a sliding gate that runs along the boundary may be the better option. Sliding gates are usually more expensive.

That leads us to the next choice, do you want it automated. You don’t have to decide this instantly, because a lot of metal gates can be retrofitted for electric openers, but it is better if the gates are built with automation in mind. This is a good thing to mention to the supplier, and it can even be a future project.

There is some maintenance, but it is not a heavy burden. Finishes that are galvanized and that have a powder-coat help hold off rust. You do need to keep and eye on spots that are chipped, as those will be the start of corrosion. The maintenance is really just the occasional touch up.

Seeing the options may clarify your choice more than a brochure, and knowing what styles and sizes are available along with what options work best for your house style are important to know before making a decision. A choice you may consider best for a modern detached house may not fit well for a house with a cottage style front.
